DNCE to Headline 2016 Capital One Halftime Show
Adding to the tradition of one of college football’s premier bowl games, multiplatinum-selling band DNCE will headline the Capital One Halftime Show during the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30 at Hard Rock Stadium. DNCE’s appearance in South Florida continues the tradition of top entertainment showcased during halftime of the Capital One Orange Bowl.
Assembled by frontman Joe Jonas in the summer of 2015, DNCE's all-star bandmates include bassist & keyboardist Cole Whittle, who co-founded the band Semi Precious Weapons, South Korean bred guitarist JinJoo, who has toured with the Jonas Brothers, Charli XCX, and CeeLoGreen, and drummer Jack Lawless, who has previously joined the Jonas Brothers, Night Terrors of 1927, and Soft Swells on the road. DNCE was a birth of a long-brewing plan by Jonas to launch an offbeat pop project inspired by the melodic R&B of Earth, Wind & Fire and Hall & Oates.
In September 2015, the L.A. based foursome released their debut single, “Cake by the Ocean,” and haven’t looked back. The song was an instant smash hit, achieving RIAA double-platinum certification and standing out as one of the most played songs on radio this year. An international success, global consumption of “Cake by the Ocean” exceeds 6.5 million adjusted singles, included more than 400 million streams on Spotify worldwide.
Building on its success, 2016 continued to be a breakout year for DNCE, as the band released its self-titled debut album DNCE on November 18 via Republic Records. DNCE has also become a powerful presence on stage. Wrapping up a string of North American tour dates alongside Selena Gomez in addition to worldwide dates in Europe and Asia, DNCE’s performance at the Capital One Orange Bowl will be one of their last in 2016. With a banner year under their belts, they’re a band that’s here to stay in a big way.
Prior to the game, country music star Cole Swindell will headline the Capital One Fan Fest presented by the Capital One Venture® card, a free event for all fans with a ticket to the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl. The Georgia native was named the 2016 NSAI Songwriter/Artist of the Year and was nominated for CMA New Artist of the Year. His Platinum-certified “You Should Be Here” already boasts over 65 million streams, 1 million tracks sold and more than 30 million YouTube views.
The song joins Swindell’s first four No. 1 consecutive singles as a solo artist (including Gold-certified “Let Me See Ya Girl,” along with Platinum-certified hits “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” “Ain’t Worth The Whiskey” and “Chillin’ It”) from his Platinum selling self-titled debut album, which tops his own record of being the only solo artist in the history of Country Aircheck/Mediabase to top the chart with his first five singles.
In 2015, Swindell won the ACM New Artist of the Year, was named to Billboard’s Top New Country Artists, awarded CMA’s “Triple Play Award” for having (at least) three No. 1 songs in the past twelve months, and was the only performer to claim the title in 2015. To date, Swindell has sold over 1.5 million+ total album equivalents in the two years since his debut, including 5 million+ tracks sold and 400 million on-demand streams.
In addition to Swindell’s performance, the Capital One Fan Fest presented by the Capital One Venture card (3-7 p.m. in SE Parking Lot of Hard Rock Stadium) also features interactive games, sports memorabilia, contests and more. Team pride will fill the air when the participating schools’ marching bands give spirited performances to rally fans of all ages.
“Capital One is set to bring another exciting lineup of entertainment to fans in South Florida this year,” said Marc Mentry, Chief Brand Officer at Capital One. “As the title sponsor of the Capital One Orange Bowl, we’re honored to have the opportunity to help shape the fan experience through performances by top musical artists, exclusive cardholder benefits, and activities for the whole family at the Capital One Fan Fest. We’re excited to present this year’s entertainment and look forward to the energy fans will bring at the Capital One Orange Bowl on December 30.”
Accompanying the pregame festivities, country duo Maddie & Tae will send the national anthem prior to kickoff at this year’s Capital One Orange Bowl. Maddie & Tae boldly introduced their debut single “Girl In A Country Song” shortly after signing with Dot Records. Featured on their debut album START HERE, of which they penned each of the eleven tracks, the platinum-certified breakout hit soared atop the Country radio charts and made them only the third female duo to peak their debut single at No. 1 in the history of the Billboard Country singles chart.
